Short answer: you can get a funded account for free by winning a free trading competition whose prize is a funded account. That is the only route open to any trader, with no deposit and no entry fee. The alternatives — paid evaluations, "instant funding" — all cost money upfront.
What "funded account" actually means
A funded account is a trading account whose capital belongs to a proprietary trading firm ("prop firm"), not to you. You trade it under their rules, and you keep a share of the profits you generate — typically 70% to 90%. You never deposit trading capital and you are not liable for losses beyond losing access to the account.
The catch in the standard industry model is the entry fee: to prove you can trade, firms sell you an "evaluation" or "challenge" for roughly $100–$600. Most traders fail, pay again, and fail again. That fee — not trader profits — is where a large part of the industry actually makes its money.
Route 1 — Win a free trading competition (the realistic one)
Some platforms run trading contests where the prize is the funded account. You compete on a demo account, so nothing is at risk, and the winners receive a real funded account paid for by the organiser.
This is how TradeWars works. Every week, traders compete on a free MT5 demo account. The top 3 by weekly return each win a €5,000 funded account, and the best trader of the month wins €25,000. Entry is free, there is no deposit and no card. Winners keep 75% of the real payouts they generate; the remaining 25% funds the platform and the next prize pool.
- Cost: €0.
- Risk: none — demo money only.
- What it takes: outperforming the other entrants over one week.
- Odds: depend entirely on how many people enter. A contest with a small field is dramatically easier than a large one — worth checking the live leaderboard before you judge.

Route 2 — Prop firm giveaways and competitions
Prop firms themselves occasionally run free giveaways (often on X, Discord or during a launch) where the prize is a free evaluation or a funded account. These are genuinely free, but they are irregular, heavily entered, and frequently decided by luck (random draws) rather than skill.
Worth doing: follow a few firms and enter when they run one. Just do not build a plan around it — you cannot schedule a giveaway.
Route 3 — Sponsorship or private backing
An individual investor or small fund backs you with their capital against a profit share. This is how it worked before prop firms industrialised the model, and it still happens — but it requires a verifiable track record and usually a personal relationship. It is not a starting point; it is something a proven trader grows into.
What does not count as free
- "Instant funding" — you pay upfront for the account instead of an evaluation. Cheaper-sounding, still paid.
- Discounted challenges — a 30% coupon on a $300 evaluation is still $210 out of your pocket.
- "Free trial" evaluations — usually free to start, paid to convert into anything real.
- Refundable fees — you are refunded only if you pass, which most people do not.
How to spot a scam
Any legitimate free route respects all of these. If one is missing, walk away:
- No deposit, no card, no "activation fee" — ever, at any step.
- Only the read-only password. If a platform needs to read your results, it should ask for your MT5 investor password (read-only), never your master password. A read-only credential cannot place trades or withdraw.
- Public rules published before you start — ranking method, deadlines, prize conditions.
- Verifiable results. If the leaderboard cannot be audited, it cannot be trusted. On TradeWars every participant's live positions and full trade history are public, so any result can be checked by anyone.
- No guaranteed profits. Anyone promising returns is either lying or unregulated — usually both.
The realistic plan
- Enter a free contest whose prize is a funded account, and treat it as a real evaluation of your process — because it is.
- Keep trading your own demo with strict rules in parallel. Consistency over a month beats one lucky week.
- Only consider paying for an evaluation once you have several profitable months of your own recorded data. Buying a challenge before that is buying a lottery ticket.
